Jewelry/Sculpture

In 1976, I repaired a few sections of concrete sidewalk, and built a set, of jewelry workbenches, for  Tony Vaccarro who owned the Cherokee Trading Post, Brighton Ave, West End Long Branch, NJ.  I had the second floor apartment, in the building next door.   Nice view of the park across the street. The Windmill/Carvel parking lot was on the east side.  Anyway, in exchange Tony agreed, to instruct me, in the jewelry arts.  We became friends.

The next few years were an immersion experience  during which I learned the arts of the silversmith, and the goldsmith.  Both forge and foundry.  I learned to cut and set semi-precious and precious stones.  And, applied this learning daily, in the design, fabrication, and repair, of jewelry, while tending to the Trading Post's business.

Living in Manhattan, in the early '80's, I met and worked with Abstract Expressionist Seymour Lipton.  Aside from learning his techniques for working metals on a monumental scale, I was treated to an invaluable stream of instruction and comment.  A teacher, Sy attempted to impart, to me, his understanding, of what art is,  and his process for creating.

Where the skills learned as a silver/goldsmith adapted well to working bronze with Sy, his teachings added greatly to my work with gold and silver.  Building around a central focus,  I attempt to evoke emotional response through a synthesis of the tensions and harmonies indicated in the movement of the metal.

The majority of my jewelry works have been direct metal fabrications.  Pieces produced in this manner are, by nature, unique.
